Florida never quite fit in; it's an appendage. It's south but not southern. A big place. The Sunshine State attracts all peoples, people who have in turn claimed it as theirs - residents, transients, and tourists. It's a place that defies easy definitions because of its diversity. It was likely summed up best by a recalled early-1980's poster conceived to enhance tourism: "Florida - The Rules Are Different Here."
