Occasionally, I’d take the medium format camera along with me, along with the Leica, to see how it affects imagery. After all is said and done, there’s no real need for me to use anything but the Leica, though there is a stunningly rich surface and mediation of light with the larger negative. Light has never been a prime motivator for me; the idea of photographing texture is frightening. For years I’ve told students to avoid photographing texture, abstractions, and patterns. Rather, the idea is to see what might be coaxed from the camera and from life.
